History
In 1964 two Health Visitors and the Vicar of St John's Church Locks Heath started a Fish Scheme for the St John's catchment area. This involved offering help to those in the community who were lonely and in need but did not fall into the category of persons helped by the statutory bodies. They used the members of St. John's Church and their contacts to place a Street Link in each of the streets in Locks Heath.
In 1967 the next vicar saw a wider need and encouraged the growth of the scheme. By 1971, the scheme had become so successful and had uncovered a number of needs not being met that it became necessary to spread the scheme to the adjoining areas of Warsash, Park Gate and Sarisbury. In order to meet those needs CommuniCare came into being.
In 1972, the first Luncheon Club was held in the Community Centre at Sarisbury Green. At first private cars were used to transport guests to the Luncheon Club but in 1975 the organisation became the proud owners of a Mini Bus, helped by Age Concern and the Rotary Club of Locks Heath. It carried seven passengers plus the driver and an escort; it had its first public outing at the 1975 Sarisbury Carnival.
The second Luncheon Club at Warsash's Victory Hall was started in 1975, since that time CommuniCare has progressed to what we have today.
In 1993 CommuniCare became a Registered Charity with the objective of:
“The relief of poor, sick, elderly or disabled persons in Locks Heath and district by the provision or assistance of
services calculated to reduce the need, hardship or distress of such persons.”
At the 2013 AGM this objective was replaced by:
"For the benefit of Senior Citizens in Locks Heath, Park Gate, Sarisbury, Swanwick, Titchfield Common, Warsash and Whiteley areas; to provide lunch clubs and transport to them; to provide a car transport service to medical appointments and minibus transport to local shopping areas.”
